The OwnerRx framework
The business grows.
Your job has to change.
You don’t become an independent owner by doing your old job more efficiently. You have to build the business, and the team, that can do it without you.
These are roles, not revenue brackets. You might be an executive in one part of your business and still the worker in another. The point is to see where you are needed, why, and what needs to change.
01 / Do the work
Worker
You can do the work. Now make it repeatable.
In the beginning, your expertise is the product. The job is to find customers, deliver well, and learn what makes money. Build repeatable ways of working before you try to remove yourself from them.
Which piece of work could someone else deliver well if you gave them a clear process?
Your next move: Make good work repeatable.
02 / Run the work
Manager
You hired people. But you’re still the answer to every question.
You’re managing more work instead of building more capability. The transition is to leaders who own outcomes, understand the business, and can make decisions without waiting for you.
Where are you still making decisions that someone on your team should own?
Your next move: Transfer responsibility, not just tasks.
03 / Build the system
Executive
Build a leadership team. Not a collection of people you supervise.
Each leader needs to run a function and understand its contribution to the whole business. Your job becomes strategy, standards, and a team that can implement without you covering every gap.
What would happen if you were unavailable during the next difficult month?
Your next move: Test the team’s ability to decide and deliver.
04 / Exercise ownership
Investor
You can stay involved. You no longer have to.
Ownership means choosing where your time and capital belong. Hold the team accountable, consider the risks and opportunities, and avoid pulling yourself back into operations simply because you can.
Which decisions genuinely belong to you as an owner, rather than to the team running the company?
Your next move: Decide what you want your ownership to make possible.
Independence is a choice, not a retirement plan.
You might want to start something else, spend more time with your family, or keep working on the parts you love. There is no prescribed life on the other side. The business should give you options.
And hiring one terrific CEO isn’t the whole answer. If everything rests on one person, you have moved the dependency. A capable leadership team gives you options, resilience, and a business with value beyond your own effort.
